For over 50 years, the Atomic Weapons Establishment or AWE has been an integral part of the defence of the United Kingdom (UK) by maintaining Trident missile warheads. These missiles would be launched by the Royal Navy via their Vanguard-Class submarines. AWE ensures consistent, reliable performance with optimal safety by manufacturing and sustaining the warheads during the entire process of the creation of nuclear warheads including concept, design, manufacture, assembly and support. They also oversee decommissioning and proper disposal of the warheads.
AWE’s international reputation as a world-class centre of scientific and technological distinction comes from their maintenance of high standards from their work and those they employ. These employees – business specialists, engineers and scientists – are world renowned and highly skilled and help to achieve AWE’s international recognition as a leader.
Graduate Opportunities
AWE stands alone in their offer of stability, investment and long term prospects for graduates. They have unique opportunities for graduate careers by offering UK nationals and possibly other groups with the chance to assist in the defence of the UK. Additionally, these careers will give you the chance to become a member of the UK’s largest and greatly important high-tech development, research and production by working with one of the greatest supercomputers in existence and in some of the world’s most eminent experimental facilities.
Industrial Placements
Where the business can support them, industrial placements of vacation students are available. By having a sponsored student scheme, talented undergraduates develop a long-term relationship with AWE in the key areas and disciplines of the company. Arrangements typically begin with a summer or sandwich placement that will progress towards a sponsorship package during the final year of University. This follows by priority access to AWE’s Graduate Programme upon graduation. To apply for an industrial placement, contact AWE at careers@awe.co.uk before the end of March.
How to Apply
AWE’s first and primary contact for any job application queries is the recruitment team, which has three distinct sections – Science/ Assurance/ IT, Engineering (including Craft roles & Apprenticeships) and Business Management/ Technical Services (including Front Line Workers). When applying, your application will be designated by one of these groups.
To make your application, contact AWE at careers@awe.co.uk or call the Reception Team on 0118982 9009 for an application pack. You can also go to http://www.awe.co.uk/careers/Applying_ec396.html and click on the “Current Vacancies?” button. It is recommended to complete an online application as they will be more efficiently handled and of course are more environmentally friendly.
With the exception of student placement enquiries, CVs are not accepted unless they have an accompanying AWE online or manual application form.
Upon application submission, the dedicated Candidate Management Team will keep applicants updated and will maintain your details or process a cancellation of your application, if needed. They can be contacted at careers@awe.co.uk or by calling 0118985 4576. Once you have made the short list for a vacancy, the contact information will change. One of AWE’s Vacancy Management team members will contact you with an invitation for assessment.
