Investment banking jobs are held in financial institutions responsible for raising capital as well as managing corporate mergers, trading in securities and dealing with acquisitions. Investment banks gain their profits from governments and companies by raising their money through the issuance and sale of securities in capital markets, including both equities and debts. Investment banks also make money through insuring bonds, such as through the selling of credit default swaps for example. Investment banks can also make money by providing advice on a number of different transactions, including for example mergers and acquisitions.

Many investment banks also offer services for strategic advisory, especially for mergers and acquisitions, divestiture and a number of other financial services for their clients, including equity securities, commodity, foreign exchange, derivatives and fixed income. Investment bankers deal with many types of clients and an innumerable selection of different types of funds including mutual funds, pension funds and hedge funds for example. They deal with the investing public and have both buy side components and sell side components as well.
