Our work
Clifford Chance lawyers are engaged in all aspects of transactional, advisory and contentious law for clients around the world. Our scale and reach across six sector-leading practices – Banking & Finance, Capital Markets, Corporate, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Real Estate and Tax, Pensions & Employment – underpinned by our reputation, ensures a steady flow of stimulating and challenging assignments. Work across these practice areas will constitute the major part of your training and future career. However, the firm is also committed to supporting an extensive range of pro bono and community programmes that will bring another dimension to your career and help you to balance your social responsibilities with a full and rewarding professional life.

Training programme
The Clifford Chance training contract has been devised to provide you with the professional skills and experience you need to make an early contribution to your team and to lay the foundations for a long-term rewarding legal career. You will gain experience in at least three different practice areas including some exposure to contentious work. Each seat will bring you into contact with new clients and colleagues, and you can expect to work on a variety of deals and projects, both large and small, as you build your portfolio of skills. Alongside our extensive and ongoing education and training initiatives you will benefit from close support from your supervisor and ‘buddy’ as you learn ‘on the job’. And with our outstanding business support teams and resources you’ll be able to focus on those tasks where you can best contribute and from which you can learn the most.
Work placements
The best way to learn about what we do is to experience it first hand through one of our vacation schemes. Joining a supportive team, you’ll work on ‘live’ deals and client matters and build a detailed understanding of what lawyers do. We run two four-week schemes over the summer holiday and a condensed two-week scheme in spring. Candidates with the appropriate language skills on our summer schemes may also enjoy the opportunity to spend two weeks in one of our overseas offices. There is also a strong social side to our work placements and you will enjoy a number of informal events with trainees, lawyers and partners where you can build your network of contacts and learn more about life as a lawyer with Clifford Chance
We also run two-day winter workshops featuring case studies and seminars as well as time in two of our practice areas that provide a compact opportunity to experience the atmosphere at Clifford Chance.
