Teach First is a teacher training and experience program in the United Kingdom that has gained tremendous praise and is growing in popularity around the country. Student teachers embark on a two year journey that gives them intensive training and in-class teaching experience among the most needy and challenged students in the United Kingdom.
Program
Teach First is no easy, soft entry into a career path of teaching. Instead, it is a training and work experience program where student teachers work in classrooms in challenging schools in the UK.
Student teachers begin their two year program with a six week residential summer intensive during which they meet other Teach First Ambassadors who have gone through the program and are now advocates of the program that has come to mean so much for them. In the first summer intensive, student teachers will also meet their Teach First team.
Throughout the entire two-year program, student teachers will attend summer intensives for year one and year two and workshops and workshops throughout the rest of the school year that will help them develop classroom management skills, subject knowledge and skills and learn innovative methods to involve and inspire class room students with motivational challenges
Locations
Presently Teach First student teachers work in challenging schools in London, the North West, East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire. Teach First is also exploring other locations in the UK.
In order to meet the challenging schools criteria, schools must meet either one or both of the following criteria – have a 30 percent school student population that receives free school meals (FSM) and/or 25 percent or less of the student population receive five A*-C grades at GCSE level or equivalent.
Additionally, schools in the Teach First program tend to be located in urban areas with diverse student populations. Many students are faced with learning English as a second language and also have the additional challenge of constantly coping with school staff turn over and changing school environment.
Applicants
Successful applicants to the 2010 Teach First program should be prepared to show off their dedication and energy to its best advantage in their application. Teach First is looking for applicants who can make a two year commitment to the entire program.
Also, successful applicants should be prepared for the inherent challenges in working in challenging schools and with the kind of students that typify this kind of schools. Student teachers will be constantly challenged by their students – not only to be innovative and enthusiastic teachers that engage their students, but also by students who have become accustomed to teachers who have little real interest in them or in their environment. The real success of Teach First is that our teachers actually reach students – really reach them – and enliven those students to become engaged in the learning process and change their lives forever.

Teach First is an incredibly successful teaching program for individuals who sincerely seek to change the lives of young people who are faced with incredible life and educational challenges. Teach First student teachers commit to a two year intensive program that gives them real world classroom experience and also teaches them classroom management, motivational methods and how to work within an environment of impoverished and unmotivated young students. Teach First is an opportunity for individuals truly passionate about making a difference in the world to step forward and participate being part of the solution and changing the lives of children.
