Hi paisano/a:
You need to be certified by the state where do you live and in some cases it depends on re-validating (or transcripts) your studies in Mexico and pass the state test to become certified. You need to check the requirements, because most of this is if you want to provide counseling services.
You can look for info in the official web page of your state, ask a librarian or a college counselor, or even look in the Internet about the National Association of Social Workers about the certification process: http://www.socialworkers.org/ce/default….
Some non-profits can take your Mexican certifications and studies as valid if you take the trainings and requirements they can ask you to go…
I am a Mexican Sociologist that worked for 5 years in a non-profit very closed to many Social Workers that’s why I know this info that I’m passing to you right now…

First things first—you’re education MUST be approved/accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Without that and an MSW you cannot even call yourself a social worker.
Then you must pass a State licensing test. Some states have different levels of licensing. But for the widest range of jobs you will need the advanced/clinical license “LCSW”. This requires an “approved/accredited” Masters of Social Work degree.
The CSWE’s Commission on Accreditation (COA) is responsible for developing accreditation standards that define competent preparation and ensuring that social work programs meet them. In accordance with the requirements of the Council’s recognition body, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, the CSWE Office of Social Work Accreditation and Educational Excellence (OSWAEE) administers a multi step accreditation process that involves program self-studies, site visits, and COA reviews.
