Is This Weird? 3 Months Into My First “desk Job” After Graduating From College…?

…And I cannot stand it. I get so fidgety, and irritated at the fact that I am just sitting here, essentially doing nothing (physically, anyway). I take breaks, stretch, and walk around. I exercise every day after work. However I am just not content here! What should I do? A more manual-labor job wouldn’t be nearly as well paying, I’m afraid.

You’ve probably done what 99% of others done. You went into a career for the money instead of contentment. Most people do.ask yourself…how many people actually love the job they do?or even enjoy it?As a society we are led to believe money is the answer to all our problems, sometimes it isn’t.Being a little lighter in the wallet but more content with your life as a whole might make you a happier all around person.I have been doing the same thing for 35 years…I traded my dream job for a money job..sure it makes me happier to an extent knowing I can provide “things”for my wife and kids…but it hasn’t made me overall “happier”or more content..in fact I’m less content than ever.I was much happier when I wasn’t married..I”m not a material person,so lots of money wasn’t a neccessity.I was content with my friends and family..with my hobbies…art ,music,..I didn’t need a huge home with the huge mortgage..Don’t get me wrong,I love my family..but they don’t understand when I tell them that I don’t “need”anything. They think everyone wants and needs something…I just want peace…a few bucks in the bank..a fishing line…and a romote control(TV) with good batteries in it.I’d be a lier if I said I didn’t want more money…only to be able to do …good luck

Totally normal. It’s called “paying your dues” and/or being a “newbie.” Here’s what you should do with your spare time to get ahead and get noticed (to get more responsibilities and possibly more work at your current job):
    - Show initiative
    - Come up with new ideas (take it slow at first)
    - Think creatively on how to improve/increase the business
    - Help train others
    - Learn new skills at the job and learn other people’s jobs so you can help them when needed
    - Ask your boss for ideas of additional tasks you can take on
Try all of these and you’ll be busy in no time and maybe even find/develop a completely new job within your company that you LOVE.
    Good luck!

That is pretty common… Sorry… The thing I do is keep myself entertained (which is easier when I have more interesting work), chat with people, try to get absorbed in the work, stand if I have to. You might find that you’ll mellow out the longer you go, you’ll just have to see. Maybe try a desk job that is more interesting?

It is not weird and I remember going through the same exact thing at a few of my internships.
You have to decide what is most important to you money or happiness. While you have this nice paying job, write out your future goals and take the steps to doing something that both makes you happy and you’re paid well to do it.

the desks at my work have the ability to be raised via a crank, I raised mine all the way so I can stand/pace while I work.
I’m either on the phone or reading stuff.

Maybe you should ask for more responsibility to keep your mind off of the fact that you can’t move much.

It sounds like you are having a hard time adjusting to the changes in your life, you are probably use to the classroom environments, interacting with college students and now you are in a new environment. Ask your supervisor for new tasks or let him/her know that you need a challenge.

No it is not weird. A lot of people are in the same situation, myself included. All you can do is get as much physical excersize during your free time as you can, and watch what you eat. Every job has its drawback and its good side too.

Try finding a sales job. Those usually pay well if you work hard and you’re not stuck behind a desk.

No it is not weird. The same thing happened to me when I started working. I was a stay at home mom with 2 part time jobs and 3 kids, then I got a desk job for the $$. Deal with it, you will get used to it. It gets very hard at times, try to do your exercising in the evening or morning. It is worth the money and health insurance.

Growing up is hard, you’re in the “real” world now. If its not want you want to do, position yourself so you can do what you want. Don’t jump jobs every year, employers want to see some stability.
Short term pain, long term gain…
