It’s Been 6 Weeks Since I Got My Degree And No Job. Am I Being Too Impatient?

So I got my chemical engineering degree about 6 weeks ago and long before then, I’ve already applied to about 10 companies. But after 6 weeks, I’ve received no responses at all. No email or phone call for an interview. I’ve got a high GPA and lots of work experience, so I know that it’s unlikely all 10 companies turned me down because of my credentials.
Is it normal for recent graduates to get a job later than 6 weeks after graduation or should I just be more patient? By the way, I live in Alberta, Canada, which is the heart of North America’s oil & gas supply (and which is what my degree is geared for), and we supposedly have a “job boom”, but I certainly don’t see that job boom affecting me right now.
